Steev [rumori] oranj.oranj.org - what is an author?

anyone seen this site? it's a sort of realaudio radio station
slash user-submitted archive, and it seems to be mostly
out there experimental stuff.
there are 3 tracks from Deconstructing Beck there, but
they got the info all wrong, attributing them to Beck as the "author"
and "Deconstructing Beck" as the "artist". huh?
well, i guess that's one thing we're trying to call into question.
What exactly is an author?
I wonder if any of the misunderstanding is caused by DJ remix culture,
in which remixes are still considered works by the remixed, not the
remixer. When someone puts out a remix record of people remixing them,
it's still "by" them. I guess you have to expect people who are used
to this to assume the same of a project like "Deconstructing Beck".
And when does something stop being a "remix" and start being a
"deconstruction", or whatever?
sigh.
smh

"Each and every sample is fragmented and bereft of prior
meaning, kind of like a future without a past.
They're given meaning only when represented in the
assemblage of the mix. In this way, the DJ acts as the cybernetic
inheritor of the improvisational tradition of jazz."
