Tonight we're indulging in a genre of bizarre storytelling and mischief which loosely fits in the category of illegal art, a category which Carrie McLaren, founder and editor of Stay Free! magazine, put in the spotlight last year in the exhibition "Illegal Art" at the SF MoMA . Tonight's show features Wizard People, Dear Readers, Brad Neely's unauthorized re-envisioning of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The movie is played with the sound off while Neely's narration on CD is turned up, replacing the original soundtrack. Appropriately, it all got started in a bar. "Some friends and I were out drinking," as Neely tells it, "and we saw this intense guy over in the corner shooting pool, hat masking his face, wearing dark glasses and a Walkman. All by himself. And he looked so focused that we were like, 'What's he listening to?' And we start pitching ideas to each other, trying to be funny, and somebody said it was probably a book on tape of Harry Potter. So then all at once, I'm doing this voice of Steven Jesse Bernstein, the poet, saying, 'then Harry gets on his broom and rips the air a new one.' Just rattling off a bunch of raunchy stuff, and everybody there started telling me that I really should actually make the book on tape, and so I ended up making this." - from an article in the Austin Chronicle. We'll also be showing parts of the Wizard of Oz with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon , a little of Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966), and clips from Mystery Science Theater 3000 . Wizard People, Dear Readers has no affiliation with Warner Brothers or the creators of Harry Potter. http://www.stayfreemagazine.org http://www.illegal-art.org ==================== Sunday, August 8th, 2004. 6-9pm Opening Reception: Divination in Everyday Life: landscapes and dreamscapes by Candace Miller painting by Candace Miller Ten years of dream documentation are the script for these mixed-media narrative paintings, which inexplicably accompany eerie photographs of far west Texas. ===================== Thursday, August 12, 2004. 7:30PM $5 "The Murder of Fred Hampton" ANSWER Film Series With an introduction by Dr. Henry Clark of West County Toxics Coalition The Black Panther Party galvanized millions of African Americans against police repression and brutality, upholding the right of armed self-defense. The government launched a campaign of murder, jailing and disinformation to destroy the BPP. This film documents the Chicago police murder of one of the most charismatic and effective Panther leaders, Illinois Party chapter chairman Fred Hampton. A fiery orator, Hampton was only 20 years old at the time, but his electrifying words and actions were inspiring young Black people to demand respect and to insist that their power and voice be felt in local politics, in any politics. But Fred Hampton's dream included all people when he proclaimed in the voice of the prophet, "... if we don't stop fascism it'll stop us all." 1971, b&w, 88min ==================== Saturday, August 14, 2004. 8PM $5 Rough Cut -Film Festival, 2004 The film festival of trailers, new, and unfinished films. The film makers get to hear the general publics opinion of their work, while there is still time to make changes. Message-ID: <48E4D4D7-EF85-11D8-B309-000A95B8FFFA@locarecords.com> Review of UK Based Electronica Duo WARD's New Single =============================================== Ward ?De Fernius? (Static Caravan). [VAN64] Last time we featured those Ward kids Richard and David was when they knocked us bandy with their debut Static release from about 18 months ago entitled ?Sesquipadelian Origins? and before you ask, no we haven?t a clue either but you can bet your life savings it doesn?t go well with chips and ketchup. Since that time they?ve squeezed out an album for Loca Records called ?It?s not necessarily your height it could be your feet? which we somehow missed but will no doubt add to our never ending wish list of releases we won?t sleep until we have. Again as with the Young Barons release another lathe cut clear vinyl polycarbonate thingummyjig type er?thing (huh and they say the art of the English language is going for a burden). Ward step in with two tracks of such contrasting calibre that you?ll either be gently lulled to sleep or frankly to scared witless to close both your eyes at the same time ever again. ?De Furnius? is creepy, in fact so creepy that we reckon it?ll ensure that you?ll be leaving on all the household lights and nervously checking behind doors, under beds and behind sofas. Casting an eerie eye; in fact the same eerie eye as those belonging to the one eyed alien invaders with a predilection (not) to influenza from War of the Worlds, sparse manipulated sounds are the order of the day, impossible to dance to we?ve tried believe it or not, though don?t be surprised if various electronic appliances start acting up strangely. If you want my honest opinion I swear its one of those pornographic sex lines for toasters but in binary code. Flip over and things get a little more playful on ?Armonica or Something? in fact so playful that you swear the Ward duo have discovered the enchanted land were all the old children?s TV themes go to when they?ve been discarded and forgotten. Amid the gentle scratchy toy box chimes the fleeting memories of Jamie and his Magic Torch, the Clangers, those surreal Charley Says adverts from the 70?s and a positive who?s who of BBC Radiophonic incidental pieces found lying around on the Tardis floor come out into the daylight for a spot of off ground tick. Very cute indeed and well worth annoying your local record emporium owner about. While your there also check out the latest line from the Static Summer Collection by Tuung (limited lathe cut): a delicious cork sleeved Maps and Diagram CD strictly limited to just 100 pressings and a split featuring the Static boys in a face off with those eminent dudes from north of the border, Fence. www.staticcaravan.org http://www.staticcaravan.org http://www.losingtoday.com/tales.php From postconsumer01 at yahoo.com Mon Aug 16 14:06:06 2004 From: postconsumer01 at yahoo.com (Jon Nelson) Date: Mon Aug 16 13:06:11 2004 Subject: [Rumori] Marclay on SAR Message-ID: <20040816200606.29072.qmail@web20526.mail.yahoo.com> Hey I'm interviewing Christian Marclay this Saturday on Some Assembly Required - tune in at radiok.org - Saturday, 2-3 PM in Minneapolis, MN. On October 5th, Bleakhouse and Praemedia will finally release Blevin Blectum’s new solo album, “Magic Maple”. Sliding down a more oblique slant off the basic BFB starboard sensation of things-not-quite-right-here, "MAGIC MAPLE" grows crystalline structures as well as it's namesake: a concise cohesive whole shaped of figmentary footsteps of Fleetwood Macintosh, paeans to Pelicans glimpsed on the borderlines of commuted Highways, vocals cut and stitched beyond imitation, rommelpots bent to bursting, denouements taken to Epic Ending proportions, doomed budgies singing their hearts out. Details of a CD release show at the Bottom of the Hill in early October are just starting to materialize. Also, keep your eyes peeled, because the new CD/DVD release by the electro-supergroup SAGAN, consisting of Blevin Blectum, Lesser, Wobbly and Ryan Junell will be hitting the streets in September. The conference, taking place March 24?26, 2005, at the University of Iowa, will interrogate the political and social dimensions of collage as a practice that enables oppositional commentary across the cultural spectrum: from the leftist collages of the Dadaists and the Situationists to the unauthorized use of corporate trademarks, interventions by queer activists, and the more recent flurry of Internet-distributed antiwar video collage pieces that appropriate from the mainstream media in satirical ways. Why? Both were written by Rod Serling! http://theforbidden-zone.com/media/tzone.shtml Torrent : http://data.chicks-dig-unix.net/tzone_pota.mov.torrent via boingboing.net more description from the creator: "A Dimension of Sound. A Dimension of Sight..." I started Planet of the Apes: The Forbidden Zone because I wanted to learn more about Planet of the Apes myself. I looked around the web for a good Apes site, but only found a couple of episode guides for the TV series. When I first started gathering information about POTA, I was surprised to learn that Rod Serling co-wrote the screenplay for Planet. Then suddenly it all made sense. "Of course! Planet is a two-hour episode of The Twilight Zone!" That idea stuck in the back of my head ever since. Then with the recent advances in digital filmmaking technology and especially after reading about fan edits (particularly the couple of Star Wars: Episode I edits that surfaced), another thought struck me: "Wouldn't it be cool to take Planet and edit it down into a thirty minute episode of The Twilight Zone, complete with Rod Serling narration?" I knew the project would take a lot of patience to assemble the pieces, but once I got them together, it would be great fun to create the final product. I'm only 4 minutes in but this is wonderful... another great episode has been added to the already perfect series. Steve Krinsky talks to some of the people who stood up to the Republican assault--with some cool Texas music thrown in the mix. 7 - 8pm: GOP Dirty Tricks: The Felon's List with Doug Schulkind and Jessie Allen Florida is one of just a handful of states that permanently disenfranchises anyone convicted of felony. Some say this law -- enacted during reconstuction when freed slaves first got the right to vote -- disproportionally affects the African American community, and could help determine the outcome of the coming presidential election. For an in-depth analysis of Florida's problematic law and its looming implications, we turn to voting rights expert Jessie Allen. As associate counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, Allen is lead attorney in a major Federal voting and civil rights suit challenging Florida's permanent voting ban for felons. 8 - 11pm: The Alternative Coronation Dave the Spazz is pre-empted to present an audio hijack of Dubya's acceptance speech. Tune your TV to NBC's live coverage of the convention from 8-11pm, and then mute the TV - WFMU will provide the alternative soundtrack. (FM, stream and archive). Cool, thanx for posting that Vicki. Yesterday I was listening to the Interactive Dubya on this stream, and it was really hilarious.
