i wish i had more time to keep up with email lists like rumori. this =20
is the first time i=B4ve really had time to even skim the archive in 2 =20
months. very good to see the vibrant traffic, wow.=20

i noticed the thread about the RIAA street vendor crackdowns and i=B4d =20
like to make a comment.=20

I=B4ve seen stats for years, and comments by analysts, that the real =20
music  piracy problem is not the internet but bootleggers on the =20
streets, especially in the 3rd world. same with movies.=20
now that i=B4ve been in south america i can personally attest that its =20
huge.  especially in brazil, and bolivia.  in street markets i saw =20
blocks and blocks of nothing but guys selling CD-Rs, often with=20
giant =20
soundsystems blasting examples of their wares. its quite a sonic =20
experience, getting that mix as you walk down the street. in sao =20
paulo especially.  sometimes there are mp3 compilation discs for=20
sale =20
too (200 rock songs! 200 sambas!)  lots of software piracy on the =20
streets, too, and in stores. games, Windows, etc.=20
=20
its interesting that in uruguay and argentina it doesnt appear to be =20
as big of a thing.  this appears to correlate with bathroom =20
technology, also, but, y=B4know, correlation !=3D connection, =20
neccesarily. hah.=20

oh, while i=B4m writing - just picked up a cool compilation disc  in =20
montevideo of dance tracks made from samples of tango music. not as =20
cool or out as senor coconut, or as ironic, but still pretty =20
interesting. (the samples are all cleared, from what i can tell in =20
the liner notes) its called "bajo fondo tango club" - literally that =20
means "low bottom tango club" ...  =20
=20
oh, and speaking of cd-rs -  i took along 7 discs full of mp3s and=20
an =20
mp3 cd player, so i could carry more music in less space.  i thot i =20
wsa being smart but the downside of this is in the heat, humidity, =20
and compression of my pack, the discs have degraded pretty rapidly. =20
the files toward the ends of all the discs now all sound a bit like =20
Marcus Popp has had his way with them...=20
