I don't want to get off the list's topic for too long, but the point is that
poetry, from a capitalist standpoint, is, in the vast majority of cases,
worse than worthless. Being a poet myself, I can vouch for that. It
actually costs (postage, envelopes, Writer's Market, sampling publications,
ISP, web space) to get published for most of us. Books of poetry are not
big sellers (unless you also happen to be an attractive young folk/pop
singer). My own opinion is that all this makes poetry inherently
subversive. (And that that in turn is why conservatives tend to make rotten
poets.)
