Remixes and Interpretations of the Work of People Like Us

A remix album? Sort of. A various artists compilation with a unifying
thread? That too.
People Like Us, following up their first Soleilmoon release "Jumble
Massive", approached a wide-ranging group of other musicians with one
request: Take the music of PLU (specifically 1997's HATE PEOPLE LIKE YOU CD
[Staalplaat]) and do whatever you like with it. The result is a mongrel-breed
plunderphonic work, not unlike the releases of People Like Us but with each
contribution bearing a very individual stamp. And each track is linked by a
short People Like Us sketch created specially for this album. So it's a
record by 24 different artists,and it's a People Like Us album, too.
Artists featured on HATE PEOPLE LIKE US include Coil, Negativland,
Death in June, Barbed, Christoph Heemann, Bruce Gilbert, Stock, Hausen &
Walkman, Rehberg & Bauer, Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic), Boyd Rice, Dummy Run,
Farmer's Manual and Sons of Silence. "Hate People Like Us" will be issued in
Europe by Staalplaat as a double CD with additional material by Cyclobe, Req
1, Andy Votel and Badly Drawn Boy, Katy Brown, Xper. Xr., Dr. P. Li Khan, Mr
Rotorvator, Sniper, V/Vm, Venoz [TKS] and Felix Kubin.
People Like Us is the creation of British composer Vicki Bennett, who
to date has released 6 full-length recordings on CD and LP in the U.S. and
Europe, as well as several collaborative releases and numerous compilation
tracks. PLU's collaborators both in the studio and in concert have included
Negativland, The Jet Black Hair People, Sniper, Mr. Rotorvator, Barbed,
MusikToerist, and more. Her newest full-length release, "The Thermos
Explorer", will be issued by UK label Hot Air in October.

PEOPLE LIKE US meet THE JET BLACK HAIR PEOPLE "In Concert" CD

This Audioview CD is the first collaborative release by the UK's People
Like Us and The Jet Black Hair People from the USA, recorded live in San
Francisco in 1998 and reconfigured for CD issue without utilizing any
overdubs or rerecordings.
People Like Us is the work of Vicki Bennett, whose CDs and LPs on
the Soleilmoon and Staalplaat labels feature her unique plunderphonic
stylings. Dada resamplings and reshufflings of so-called Easy Listening
music and Alpine yodelling LPs are recurrent themes, as is the use of
intercepted radio broadcasts gutted and completely recontextualized. From
her first release in 1991, ANOTHER KIND OF HUMOR ANOTHER KIND OF MURDER,
a split LP with Abraxas (World Serpent GBCD1) to her latest project, the
forthcoming THE THERMOS EXPLORER on the Hot Air label, People Like Us has
created or contributed to more than 25 CDs and records.
Her numerous radio credits include works commissioned for VPRO in Holland
and regular appearances on Radio 100 and BBC in Europe and Negativland's
Over The Edge program in the USA, and she has collaborated both on record
and in concert with many musicians and visual artists throughout Europe
and the US. Summer 1999 sees the release of a remix CD of PLU by the
following artists: Coil, Bruce Gilbert, Rehberg & Bauer, Cyclobe,
Christoph Heemann, Negativland, Mika Vainio, Boyd Rice, Farmers Manual,
Death in June, Req 1, Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run, Andy Votel and
Badly Drawn Boy, Katy Brown, Xper. Xr., Dr. P. Li Khan, Mr Rotorvator,
Barbed, Sons of Silence, Sniper, V/Vm, Venoz [TKS], Felix Kubin.
The Jet Black Hair People is the solo project of Peter Conheim, a San
Francisco Bay Area-based multimedia artist and founding member of
Wet Gate (known as the "all-projector" trio, creating musical-visual
performances using only 16mm projectors and films) and "spy-fi" purveyors
Mono Pause. The spirit of plunderphonia is a consistent thread
through his various projects, which all dip into the wastebasket of
culture through reuse of educational films and media, religious
propaganda, and countless other sonic sources. He is also a current
member of the legendary found-sound troup Negativland and frequent
contributor to their weekly Over The Edge radio program. Mono Pause and
Wet Gate have released numerous CD's, cassettes, and compilation tracks,
and recent Wet Gate performances have included the 1998 Opus 415 Common
Sense Composers Collective Marathon (alongside Harold Budd, Henry Brant,
Carl Stone, Pamela Z., and many more) and an Artists In Residence series
at the 1999 Taos Talking Pictures Festival in New Mexico, USA.
Conheim and Bennett also performed together at the ARS Electronica
1998/Times Up SOUND OF MUSIC event.
