I know, I didn't say exactly what I meant, but outside of "late 20th c.
Capitalism" sampling doesn't really have any extra significance, at least,
that's the general idea I get from previous intellectual property
discussions. I guess I'm saying that musique concrete isn't analogous to
dub or to the remix or to Negativland's or the Tape-Beatles work -
although, on the other hand, it might as well be. Thinking back to N.
Rabbit's post, I don't try to make a [artistic] distinction between
recordings made digitally or by analog or whether they're "just sounds" or
music. They're all pressure waves ;^)

How might you draw that Venn diagram? The prime set might be "vibrations,"
which you could break down into "audible" and "inaudible." There should be
a subset for "noise." Now I'm stuck - at this level, what criteria of sound
are objective?

I'm getting off topic.... goodnight everyone and god bless.

heh. and also misleading, even besides my previous points. it perpetuates
the myth that what we're doing is wrong, that it's theft.

>What does "musique concrete" have to do with sampling? I understand

that's kind of my point. all these areas are related but different. a
subset of musique concrete is sampling, at least conceptually (considering
rabbit's note about technology, none of Pierre Schaeffer's work was really
"sampling", but in spirit, it was, i think). We're looking at lots of
Circles that overlap, a venn diagram, i think it's called. all squares are
rectangles but not all rectangles are squares....

you're right about schaeffer partially. but some of his source material
was pre-existing recordings, if i'm not mistaken. but sampling doesnt
neccesarily mean copyright infringement either. again, there's a subset of
it that is infringement. and copyright infringement is a subset of
intellectual property law violation. and intellectual property is a form
of property. and property is a form of... well, never mind...

smh

thanx, that's very true!
