RIAA Retains Bob Dole For Legal Team

Former Senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole has been
retained to serve on the Recording Industry Association of
America's (RIAA) legal team, the RIAA confirmed today.

RIAA spokesperson Doug Curry confirmed that the influential group had hired
Dole, but would not go into details about Dole's role in the association.

News of the Dole appointment leaked out just hours ahead of an expected
Appeals Court ruling on the legality of the digital music-sharing site
Napster.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco late Friday released a
brief statement, saying that it would issue its ruling on Monday morning.

The recording industry in December 1999 filed a copyright infringement
lawsuit against Napster, which enables users to download copyrighted music
from hard drives of other users for free. Major recording labels -
Universal, Warner, EMI and Sony - want Napster forever barred from operating
its file-sharing service, claiming it steals royalties from artists.
